Roof Installation Begins on Brno’s New Multifunctional Arena Using Europe’s Largest Crane

“There is a saying that the roof makes the house—and it certainly holds true here. The installation of this structure marks a major milestone for the entire project. With the roof taking shape, the multifunctional arena is finally beginning to reveal its distinctive appearance. Like many people in Brno, I can already imagine coming here regularly to enjoy sporting events and cultural experiences. I’m delighted that construction is progressing so well and that we can witness this important moment today,” said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková.

Installation of the roof structure involves four heavy lifts of pre-assembled steel sections. “These roof components are exceptionally large and heavy, which required highly specialised lifting equipment. That is why Europe’s largest crane was brought to Brno. With a lifting capacity of 750 tonnes and a maximum height of up to 196 metres, it is capable of safely placing each section onto the arena’s structural framework,” explained Petr Kratochvíl, Chairman of the Board of ARENA BRNO.

The installation schedule depends on weather conditions. Strong winds may extend the duration of the works. Under favourable conditions, however, this key phase is expected to be completed within one week. “The next stage will involve installing the individual roof trusses, which will be carried out using the conventional cranes we have been working with throughout the project. This phase is expected to take around five months. It will then be followed by tensioning the roof cables and removing the temporary support structures inside the arena. The next step will be the installation of steel catwalks suspended from the roof structure, which will ultimately support the arena’s technical systems,” added Petr Slezáček, Head of the Project Team at HOCHTIEF CZ. Work on the roof installation is continuing at full pace.
